Crime fans can improve their English with the help of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple later this year.

Agatha Christie is one of the world's best-known and best-selling novelists. She has sold more than two billion books all over the world, and they have been translated into 45 different languages.

She had close links to Torquay in Devon, and the area will celebrate with its fifth annual Agatha Christie Week this September.

The Totnes School of English is running its first English plus Agatha Christie course for mature students during the same week.

"She is such an English author and very popular. Her books and life are interesting and open up all sorts of discussions. It's going to be good fun," says Margie Barker, director of the school.

Students joining the course will be told which Christie novel to read before they arrive. During their week at the school they will study the book and use it to improve their vocabulary.

Students will also take a workshop about Mrs Christie's life, and visit her home by boat. They are also likely to enjoy at least one performance of a Christie novel (including a picnic if the weather is good) and a stroll around some of the sights mentioned in her books.

Details of which novel will be studied and what performances the students will see will be available later in the summer when the Agatha Christie Week festival programme is officially announced. The festival, from 13-18 September, is timed for the anniversary of Mrs Christie's birthday.

The school has run Christie courses aimed at all ages in the past, but noticed that it was particularly popular with older students. This year the programme is only for students aged 40-plus, and it has already attracted interest from Japan, Germany and Switzerland.
