PRELIM project: UK ELT supporting teaching in English around the world

The Partnered Remote Language Improvement project (PRELIM) supported the development of teachers using English across the world. 

Funded by the British Council and run in partnership with IATEFL and English UK, with NILE as managing consultants, PRELIM 1 and PRELIM 2 aimed to improve the English language competence of participating English teachers and increase their confidence in the classroom. PRELIM 3 was an initiative involving 25 partnerships between accredited UK English language teaching institutions and English language teacher associations outside the UK. The partnerships developed and disseminated packages of supplementary resources for teachers of English in each teacher association's context.

All projects are delivered by an Accreditation UK centre that works with IATEFL associated English Teaching Associations (ETAs) in each participating nation.

PRELIM 3

The PRELIM 3 project partnerships ran from January 2023 to March 2024. It consisted of partnerships between accredited language schools and English Teacher Associations (ETAs) in 25 countries working together to create and disseminate bespoke classroom resources. 

The aim of PRELIM 3 was to support English language teachers by creating bespoke resources to use in lessons with their students. It also aimed to develop the capacity of the UK centres and their ETA partners through creating and distributing contextually relevant ELT resources, which should have a lasting impact and benefit the teachers who use them.

PRELIM 2

After the huge success of the original PRELIM in early 2021 (see below), the British Council secured £500,000 funding to enable twice as many countries and UK language centres to take part in 2022.

PRELIM 2 supported the development of over 2500 English language teachers through 40 individual partnerships between 35 UK language centres and 40 English Teacher Associations (ETAs) worldwide. 

Each project was run independently by an accredited language centre with support from NILE to create a community of practice and facilitate the project. Through collaborative planning, each partnership created a bespoke online learning course for a targeted group of teachers appropriate to their needs and delivered within the contextual limitations and opportunities of the country of the ETA. 

The courses, delivered between January and March 2022, were notable for:

  • the variety of their digital solutions
  • the creativity of their instructional design and
  • the flexibility of their management and delivery in responding to the changing realities of the everyday experiences of the participants.

PRELIM 1

PRELIM first launched in October 2020 and saw 17 English UK member centres including universities and small family-run institutions, deliver 20 bespoke, innovative online courses in spring 2021 to different teaching associations around the world.

The aims of the project were threefold:

  • To increase the language proficiency and professional confidence in using English in the classroom among teachers worldwide
  • To foster and support partnerships between teachers, English Teacher Associations and English UK member schools
  • To create opportunity for increased global contextual awareness and teacher training capacity of English UK members, and to build a sustainable community of practice among them.

PRELIM 1 successfully achieved these aims and reached around 3,000 overseas teachers across 20 countries. The project report, compiled by NILE, summarises the main findings of the 20 reports from the individual PRELIM projects.
