Another UK legend dies

Actor Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, died last week. Like David Bowie, who died a few days earlier, Mr Rickman was 69, had been suffering from cancer, and had kept his illness private.

Mr Rickman started as a Shakespearian actor but then became a fantastic Hollywood bad man in films like Die Hard and Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. He was also much-loved as Snape in Harry Potter. 

First spacewalk by UK astronaut

Major Tim Peake became the first Briton to walk in space last week. He is spending six months on the International Space Station and spent four hours fixing the power supply in space last week.

His spacewalk was shorter than planned because water began to fill the helmet of his colleague. 

Major Peake said it was "a proud moment" to step into space with the UK flag on his spacesuit. 

Royal Shakespeare Company uses new tech in its latest show

The Royal Shakespeare Company will this year become the first theatre to put digital "avatars" on stage with live actors. The company is working with studios run by Andy Serkis (Gollum in Lord of the Rings) to use the latest technology in a production of The Tempest. 

The Tempest has a supernatural character called Ariel who would be shown as a 3D hologram on stage. The company is not planning to pre-record the Ariel role, but to have an actor backstage controlling the movements every night.

The RSC says that Shakespeare himself used spectacular techniques to stage his plays, and The Tempest will be its final production of the Shakespeare 400th anniversary year.

Couple win GBP33m

David and Carol Martin became the UK's biggest Lottery winners last week when they shared a GBP 66m jackpot.

The pair said they were "stunned" to win and to start with just kept on drinking cups of tea. They had to buy champagne classes after the Lottery company said it would bring them champagne to celebrate their win. They plan to buy a new house close to where they live now and Mr Martin would like a car and some new shoes.
