Studying ELT in the UK: things to see and do when you visit in 2019

As usual, there are lots of things to do in the UK for visitors this year. Here are a few of the highlights.

TV and film

The final Game of Thrones season began showing in April. Northern Ireland, where it is filmed, has location tours and a special exhibition to see costumes and much more.

Downton Abbey fans can celebrate the movie coming out in September with a visit to Highclere Castle where it is filmed, and an open-air concert Downton Abbey Live in June.

Exhibitions and festivals

Van Gogh and Britain: see how the painter was inspired by the UK and inspired British artists at Tate Britain until Sunday 11 August.

Leonardo da Vinci – A Life In Drawing: 144 works from the Royal collection go on show all over the UK to commemorate 500 years since the artist's death, until May. After that the drawings go to an exhibition at The Queen's Gallery in London before moving to The Queen's Gallery in Edinburgh from November.

Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams: is on at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London until September.

Sample the best of UK food at the Taste of London Festival in June.

Music

Parklife in Manchester has Cardi B and Solange on the bill in June.

Bestival is a family-friendly event in July where Nile Rodgers and CHIC are headlining.

Boomtown is a drum and bass celebration in Winchester in August.

Sport

Venues in England and Wales will host the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup between May and July.

Liverpool will host the Netball World Cup in July.

Watch cycle racing in Yorkshire in September when a thousand cyclists from 75 countries compete in the UCI Road World Championships.

Leeds United Football Club celebrates 100 years with special activities and events.

Street League Skateboarding, one of the world's biggest competitions, will be held at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in May.

National events

200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert is marked with events around London and the UK, including some at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Wales is celebrating a Year of Discovery for tourism, with lots to do and see.
